The official language of Costa Rica is Spanish. However, there are also many local indigenous languages, such as Bribrí. English is the first foreign language and the second most taught language in Costa Rica, followed by French, German, Italianand Chinese. A creole language called Mekatelyu is also spoken in Limón.

What is Pura Vida?
Pura Vida. The term has been present in Costa Rican dialect for some 50+ years.Pura Vida has a simple English translation but a far more profound meaning to the people of Costa Rica and anyone spending any amount of time in this majestic country. Pura vida. Pronounced POO-rah VEE-dah, in English means, "Pure Life".

What does it mean Costa Rica?

Why are they called Ticos?
The first is that it derives from the tendency of Costa Ricans to use -tico as the diminutive suffix in Spanish instead of the more common and widely used -ito. Literally -tico, when used as a suffix, in Costa Rican Spanish denotes something very small, as the suffix -ito would.




Costa Rica celebrates life, both human and otherwise; innovative sustainability initiatives protect its tropical jungles, misty cloud forests, and fantastic biodiversity while the absence of a standing army reflects the country’s commitment to peace. It’s a unique place for enjoying “pura vida” or pure life, a phrase locals use for everything from greetings to saying thank you or even “cool”.
In a land of lush natural landscapes, appetizing culinary traditions, and a thriving arts scene, it’s no wonder that Costa Ricans are known for loving life. The small country sandwiched between the Caribbean and the Pacific is also known for its fresh seafood, particularly in the form of Ceviche, along with fresh fruits and coffee. The most popular sport is soccer and national team matches are widely viewed events.  
San José, the capital city, is a hub of Costa Rican culture with a growing network of theatres and museums. It's a modern city with bustling commerce and brisk expressions of art and architecture. The central valley city of Alajuela and the city of Limon right on the Caribbean are also popular destinations.
