Throughout Cambodia's long history, religion has been a major source of cultural inspiration. Over nearly two millennia, Cambodians have developed a uniqueKhmer belief from the syncreticism of indigenous animistic beliefs and the Indian religions of Buddhismand Hinduism.Cambodia ( i/kæmˈboʊdiə/; Khmer: កម្ពុជា, Kampuchea, IPA: [kɑmpuˈciə]), officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia (Khmer: ព្រះរាជាណាចក្រកម្ពុជា, Preăh Réachéanachâk Kâmpŭchéa, IPA: [ˈprĕəh riəciənaːˈcɑk kɑmpuˈciə]) and once known as the Khmer Empire, is a country located in the southern portion of the IndochinaThe culture of the Cambodian people can be seen as a mixture of hinduism and buddhism, and reflects a country rich in history and heritage. The official religion of the Kingdom of Cambodia is Theravada Buddhism, which is practised by more than 90% of the population.
In Khmer culture a person's head is believed to contain the person's soul--therefore making it taboo to touch or point your feet at it. It is also considered to be extremely disrespectful to point or sleep with your feet pointing at a person, as the feet are the lowest part of the body and are considered to be impure.
